Lincolnshire Sausage Association Has Formed

Lincolnshire Butchers are making progress in their campaign to gain European Union protection for Lincolnshire Pork Sausages.

At a meeting of producers on Wednesday 15th March, attended by Matthew O’Callaghan, Chairman of the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association, the butchers agreed to the immediate formation of the:

“Lincolnshire Sausage Association”

A Chairman was elected, Janet Godfrey, Chairman of the Lincolnshire Forum and Graham Booth of George Adams was appointed Secretary. Others present have agreed to be committee members.

Membership of the Association is open to any butchers or sausage producers within the Lincolnshire County boundary upon payment of the £10 membership fee.

The next stage will be to submit a formal application via DEFRA. Further meetings of the Association are planned in the next few weeks to take this forward.

The ultimate aim of the Association will be to ensure that all Lincolnshire Sausages are produced in Lincolnshire and conform to an agreed standard, which will prevent inferior imitations being sold to unsuspecting consumers. Janet Godfrey said “it is almost impossible to buy a true Lincolnshire Sausage outside of the county – the rest of the country really doesn’t know what it’s missing! PGI status would allow Lincolnshire manufacturers to dictate the specifications of a true Lincolnshire Sausage”.

All Lincolnshire butchers are urged to join the Association by contacting Janet Godfrey at janet.godfrey@godfrey.uk.com or Graham Booth at gbooth@geo-adams.co.uk.

One key area still to be decided is whether to push for Lincolnshire Sausages only to be made from Lincolnshire produced pork or whether to allow all British farm assured pork to be used.
